8 Natural Pain Relief Measures for Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain diagnosis that causes a variety of types of pain and symptoms.

Characteristically, it causes extensive pain in the muscles and joints. Therefore, it is no wonder that those with fibromyalgia often seek painkillers in the form of medication and treatment.

The only problem is that prescription painkillers often come with a wide range of side effects and are often addictive. That is why we have compiled a list of 8 natural remedies that can help with pain relief. Feel free to comment if you have more good input.

Tip: Other measures that can work to relieve pain include specially adapted compression gloves og use of trigger point balls (see example here - the link opens in a new window).

VIDEO: 6 Gentle Strength Exercises for Those with Fibromyalgia

Exercising for us with fibromyalgia can be incredibly difficult at times.

This is exactly why chiropractor Alexander Andorff, in collaboration with a physiotherapist and his local rheumatism team, created this gentle strength training program. Which of course may not go on the days when the condition is in flare-up, but which can be good on better days. Click on the video below to see the exercises.

1. Sleep

sleeping problems

Getting enough sleep is extremely important for us with fibromyalgia.

When we sleep, sore muscles are repaired and the brain gets a "restart". The only problem is that this group of patients often suffers from sleep problems due to pain and fatigue - which means that you never feel rested and that you are constantly tired.

Therefore, it is extremely important to have good sleep routines for us with fibromyalgia.

Such sleep hygiene measures may include:

  • To avoid and sleep during the day and to stand over the afternoon nap
  • That you always lie down and get up at the same time
  • That it is extra important to reduce light and sound in the bedroom
  • To put away your mobile or tablet at least 30 minutes before going to bed

There are medications to numb the pain and get some sleep, but unfortunately many of them have a long list of side effects. Therefore, it is important that you are also good at using self-treatment in the form of walks in the woods, hot water pool training, as well as use of trigger point balls against sore muscles and swimming.

Too many people are plagued with chronic pain that destroys everyday life - that's why we encourage you to Share this article in social mediaFeel free to like our Facebook page and say, "Yes to more research on fibromyalgia".

In this way, the symptoms of this diagnosis can be made more visible and more people taken seriously - and thus get the help they need. We also hope that such increased attention can lead to greater funding for research on new assessment and treatment methods.

2. Customized and Gentle Exercise

Exercises against neck and shoulder muscle tension

Many people with fibromyalgia often meet people who do not understand why they cannot exercise as usual.

The answer is that they have a chronic pain diagnosis with highly sensitive muscles, tendons and nerves - which can be triggered by too hard training. This means that people with fibromyalgia need to exercise adapted to their ability, illness history and daily form.

To make it even more complicated, even if a patient with fibromyalgia has the benefit of pilates, it does not mean that it works for everyone. You therefore need individual, customized training programs that are suitable just in relation to your personal life.

That being said, there are a number of measures that generally work better for those with fibro and chronic pain diagnoses than others. This includes yoga, pilates, forest walks and hot water pool training.

3. Rest and «micro-breaks»

Sukhusana yoga posture

When afflicted with fibromyalgia, there is an ongoing drainage of energy levels in the body.

This means that one can experience that the need to take it easy in everyday life and not "burn all the gunpowder" at once is higher than for those who are not affected by this diagnosis. Micro breaks of anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes spread throughout breaks throughout the day. The key is to listen to what your body is saying to you.

This applies to both work and everyday life - so it is important that colleagues take the diagnosis into account and try to relieve the affected person in the situations where this is possible. Unfortunately, not everyone is as empathetic when it comes to such adaptations - but you just have to try to shake it off as best you can.

Adapted diet with a healthy energy base, grant of Q10, meditation, as well as physical treatment of joints and muscles, has shown that it together (or on its own) can help to increase energy in everyday life. Maybe you can dedicate 15 minutes to meditation after the end of the workday, for example?

4. A Consistent Healthy Lifestyle

Vegetables - Fruits and vegetables

In order to gain some control over the diagnosis of fibromyalgia, one must make every effort to do so.

This means making adjustments in everything from diet to sleep habits to reduce the chance of flares and worsening. It can be demanding to work so extensively, but the result can be absolutely fantastic and can involve a reduction of pain and increased energy in everyday life.

We have previously written an article about what we believe is perhaps the very best diet for those with fibromyalgia - namely the evidence-based fibromyalgia diet (read more about it by clicking here).

But eating right also means avoiding eating wrong - by, for example, trying to avoid too much sugar, alcohol and other pro-inflammatory (inflammatory) ingredients.

5. Reduce Stress

stress headaches

Stress causes a variety of physical, mental and chemical responses in our body.

In fibromyalgia, such responses become significantly stronger than in many others due to an oversensitivity in the body's immune system and the autonomic nervous system.

Prolonged and significant stress can also contribute to fibrotic fog. Symptoms of such brain fog can be temporary memory loss, difficulty remembering names and places - or generally impaired ability to solve tasks that require systematic and logical thinking.

It is now believed that this fibrotic nebula is due change in brain activity among those with fibromyalgia - a problem they have called "nerve noise". This term describes random electrical currents that destroy the communication between different brain parts.

You can think of it as such interference that could occasionally be heard on the old FM radios - grinding simply.

Treatment methods and measures to reduce stress in everyday life can include mindfullness, meditation, yoga, pilates and light clothing exercises.

6. Acupuncture

acupuncture nalebehandling

Medical acupuncture - also known as intramuscular needle treatment or dry needling has a documented effect in relation to the relief of certain fibromyalgia symptoms. It does not work for everyone - but many can benefit from this treatment method which is often used by modern chiropractors and physiotherapists.

Acupuncture works by lowering the sensitivity of the muscles and increasing the local blood circulation in the treated area. It can cause quite strong reactions in the beginning with, among other things, proper soreness and occasionally temporarily increased pain - but as mentioned, this is quite normal and the treatment method is very safe when performed by authorized health personnel.

If you have questions regarding treatment methods and assessment of fibromyalgia, we recommend that you join your local rheumatism association, join a support group on the internet (we recommend the facebook group «Rheumatism and Chronic Pain - Norway: News, Unity and Research«) And be open with those around you.

7. Massage, Physiotherapy and Chiropractic

aches in muscles and joints

The vast majority of people with fibromyalgia are assisted by physical therapy performed by an authorized health professional. In Norway, the three publicly licensed professions are chiropractor, physiotherapist and manual therapist.

Physical therapy usually consists of a combination of joint mobilization (against stiff and unsteady joints), muscular techniques (which help to break down muscular tension and muscular tissue damage) and instruction in home exercises (such as those shown in the video further down in the article ).

It is important that your clinician resolves your problem with a multidisciplinary approach consisting of both joint therapy and muscle techniques - to help increase your mobility in dysfunctional joints and reduce muscle tissue damage. Feel free to contact us via our FB page if you want recommendations near you.

8. Yoga and Meditation

Thus yoga can relieve fibromyalgia 3

Yoga is a gentle form of exercise training.

Most people with fibromyalgia can benefit from quiet and personalized yoga (click the image above or here to read more about this gentle form of exercise and its effect on fibro-symptoms).

Like hot water pool training, this is also a good social gathering that can help you establish social contacts and new friendships.
