STUDY: Walnuts can prevent bowel cancer
A study published in the research journal Cancer Prevention Research has shown very exciting results for a new good reason to eat more walnuts. The study showed, for the very first time, that eating walnuts could prevent bowel cancer and function very positively on the bacterial flora in the stomach and intestines. This is fantastic news and has never been shown before!
Bowel cancer is a deadly form of cancer that, according to the Cancer Society, affected 4129 people in 2014. These numbers are steadily rising in connection with poorer nutrition and other known risk factors for this cancer.
- The study showed that walnuts prevented bowel cancer formation
The study gave the rats about 10% of their daily caloric intake in the form of walnuts. This is equivalent to about a handful of people. One of the researchers in the study, Dr. Rosenberg, stated that "our results show for the very first time that walnuts can prevent and reduce intestinal cancer formation". What was seen in the results was that the walnuts contribute to a healthy intestinal flora by acting as probiotics (promotes good bacteria) - this resulted in the intestines receiving protection against cancer formation.
- Walnuts contain a number of health-promoting ingredients
Walnuts are among the healthiest nuts one can eat. They contain a high level of the antioxidant vitamin E and have the highest content of polyunsaturated fatty acids among the most common nuts we eat here in Norway.
- Positive effect against lifestyle-related diseases (among others diabetes!)
Walnuts have previously shown that they can have a very good effect on lifestyle-related ailments such as heart and vascular diseases, diabetes and neurological conditions. This is a nut that most of us will benefit from adding to our daily diet.
Conclusion:
Great news! Very exciting research that supports that nuts should be part of the daily diet among most people. In the future, we hope that they will also be able to conduct larger clinical studies with humans in order to provide more accurate information regarding efficacy.
