STUDY: - New Treatment Can Stop Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

A study published in the research journal The Lancet has shown very exciting results for a new form of treatment aimed at stopping the development of MS - also known as multiple sclerosis. MS is a progressive, autoimmune nerve disease that gradually destroys the insulating layer (myelin) around the nerves and which can thus lead to a number of ailments as the condition worsens and disrupts the electrical signals transported in the nerves. You can read more in-depth information about MS here .

The study was conducted at 3 different hospitals in Canada. Here, 24 patients aged 18-50 years were treated with chemotherapy and stem cell treatment - in a treatment that definitely involves risk - and it must be noted that in 23 patients the development of MS stopped completely without recurrence for up to 13 years - which is absolutely fantastic ! Unfortunately, there was also 1 patient who died during the treatment setup. Which emphasizes the risk of such treatment.

- The study showed a good effect, but also a high risk

The study combined aggressive chemotherapy with stem cell therapy - a form of treatment that has been tried before, but not in this way. In this treatment, they went further than just suppression (reduction) of the immune system. They ruined it complete before the added stem cells. In connection with the launch of the study, it was stated that the research "gives hope", but that it also "comes with a high risk". Unfortunately, the last comment is emphasized by the person who died during the treatment.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

- New form of treatment: Immune destruction combined with stem cell treatment

Given that multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease, a condition in which the body's own immune system attacks its own cells - in this diagnosis the myelin cells, so the researchers wanted to completely destroy the immune system with cytotoxic drugs before the added stem cells. Visually, this can be compared to reformatting the hard drive on the PC - you simply start with blank sheets. Then stem cells, which had been collected from the person's own blood at such a blood age that they had not yet developed MS defects, were added. These stem cells thus build up the immune system from scratch. This is very exciting research for anyone affected by one Autoimmune disease.

- Everyone who participated in the study was severely affected by MS

The participants had all been given a "bad prognosis" with regard to the development of the nervous condition and had also tried immunosuppression treatment without effect. Of the 23, no relapse or negative development of the diagnosis was measured for up to 13 years after treatment, but unfortunately, as mentioned, one person died during the aggressive chemotherapy regimen. This is a risk assessment that must be taken by the individual affected by MS - as the treatment can actually be fatal.

- Larger clinical trials in the future

One of the researchers himself said that a weakness with the study is that they had no control group. They also emphasize that this type of research is at an early stage, but that the results look very promising. This was further confirmed by Dr Stephen Minger, a stem cell biologist, who described the results of the study as "very impressive".

Conclusion:

Our thoughts are that one should focus further on such research and try to carry out larger studies with control groups to be able to provide more accurate information regarding effect and risk. If you want to read more about the study, you can do so here.
