Epilepsy Medicine Can Prevent Nerve Injury In MS!
A study published in the research journal Lancet has shown fantastic results with a mildly surprising drug. They found that an already known drug used for epileptic seizures could potentially be used to prevent nerve damage in multiple sclerosis (MS).
Phenytoin is a drug used in the treatment of epileptic seizures. This drug may prove to be a true revolution in the treatment of the nerve diagnosis multiple sclerosis (MS) - which is a nerve disease in which the myelin that insulates the nerves is gradually destroyed. The researchers found that the drug reduced and prevented the development of optic neuritis - which is a common nerve damage in connection with MS and often the first symptom. Do you have input? Reduced damage to the optic nerve
The researchers wanted to find out phenytoin be able to prevent and reduce damage to the optic nerve. Therefore, they selected 86 participants in the study who had already been diagnosed with optic neuritis - a characteristic symptom of multiple sclerosis (MS). They also chose those with this diagnosis because inflammation and damage to this nerve are easy to measure. The results were very good - after 3 months it could be seen that those who had received drug treatment had 30% less damage to the retinal nerve fibers. These are completely unique results that can have a massive impact on those affected.
May lead to new total treatment for multiple sclerosis
At present, there are no drugs that can prevent nerve damage in MS - which is why this study is so unique and potentially revolutionary. The researchers claim that this can not only lead to a new treatment of optic neuritis - but also lead to a new total drug treatment of MS.
This could be a concrete breakthrough in the treatment of MS. Fantastically exciting. We also remind you that previous research has established that people diagnosed with MS should take vitamin D supplements. If you want to read the whole study, you will find a link at the bottom of the article.
