Book Reading Extends Life!

A study published in the research journal Social Science and Medicine has shown that reading books can actually prolong life. The researchers found that reading books can increase life expectancy by a full two years - and that the more you read the better.

Becca Levy, an epidemiology professor at Yale University, is one of the lead researchers behind the study. Their latest published research shows that reading is not only a good pastime, but also directly healthy for body and mind.

Book reading increased survival by 23 percent

3635 men and women participated in the study - mainly in the age group 50+. The study lasted over 12 years and the participants were followed up along the way. The conclusion was as follows:

"Compared to adults who do not read books, book readers who read books up to 3 1/2 hours a week have a 17 percent lower chance of dying - and those who read more than 3 1/2 hours a week have a 23 percent greater chance of survival. »

In the study, they found that those who read books lived almost 2 years longer than those who did not read books - the findings were still significant after taking into account variable factors such as age, gender, income, education and self-reported health status. A good argument for picking up the book on the edge of the bed! In the past, book reading has also been directly linked to positive cognitive functions and increased empathy.

The mechanism is unknown, but most likely linked to increased cognitive function

The study could not say with certainty the very reason why book reading prolonged life, but they speculated that it has improved brain function and cognitive abilities. Previously, research from 2013 has also shown that book reading is directly linked to improved linkage between brain cells.
