8 Good advice and measures against dizziness

Are you or someone you know affected by dizziness? Here are 8 good tips and measures that can reduce dizziness and vertigo. We strongly advise you to contact a clinician to find out what kind of vertigo you are afflicted with.

1. Drink water: If you are dehydrated, this can lead to low blood pressure (hypotension) - which in turn can lead to dizziness, especially when walking from a lying to a standing position and the like.

2. Take vitamins: The guidelines for treating dizziness (especially among the elderly) state that you should take multi-vitamin if you suffer from this and have a slightly varied dietary intake.

3. Massage and muscle work: Tight muscles and stiff joints can give rise to what we call cervical dizziness, also known as neck-related dizziness. Physical techniques can increase blood circulation in the area and relieve muscular tension, thus releasing a possible cause of dizziness. Needle treatment can also be effective with extra strong myalgia.

4. Stress down and rest: You are advised to listen for your body's signals - if you experience dizziness, then it is a warning that you must do something about it. If your body asks you to stop doing something, then you do well to listen. Take a deep breath and try to take time for yourself in the midst of all the chaos.

5. Avoid alcohol: If you are tormented by dizziness, then alcohol is a very bad idea. In most cases, alcohol will aggravate dizziness, both in terms of frequency and intensity.

6. Joint treatment: Stiff neck and joint dysfunctions (when the joints do not move properly) can be a cause of cervicogenic dizziness (neck-related dizziness) - especially the upper neck joints have been linked to dizziness. Adapted joint therapy (eg chiropractor or manual therapist) can be effective in treating nearby joint dysfunction. Joint dysfunction is often a significant factor in the complex picture of dizziness symptoms. A clinician will do a thorough examination and then determine the best possible procedure for you, most often consisting of a combination of muscle work, joint correction, home exercises, stretching and ergonomic advice.

7. Cloth out and keep moving + heat treatment: Regular light stretching and movement of the neck will ensure that the area maintains a normal movement pattern and prevents shortening of related muscles. It can also increase blood circulation in the area, which assists the natural healing process. Do not stop completely, but also listen when your body tells you that you should take a break. If you are wondering what kind of exercises you can do - then you should consult with professional help or ask us (free).

We also recommend that you use heat packs regularly to keep your muscles moving. A good rule of thumb is "cool down when it's really painful and warm up when you want to keep it going". We therefore recommend this reusable hot / cold pack (can be used both as a cold pack and a heat pack - because it can both be cooled in the freezer and heated in the microwave) which also comes with a handy compression wrap so you can attach it where you are in pain.

8. Apple's Maneuver: This maneuver is performed by chiropractors, manual therapists and ENT doctors in the treatment of crystal melanoma (BPPV). It is a very effective technique, which normally only needs 1-2 treatments for complete relief of the crystal disease.
