Appendicitis is an inflammation of a part of the intestine that we call the appendix - it is about 10 centimeters long and is positioned in the lower abdomen on the right side. With persistent inflammation, sometimes for as little as 48 to 72 hours, the bowel can swell and rupture - causing bacteria, feces and gas to leak further into the stomach and abdomen. This can lead to further infections that can be life-threatening. Normally, an appendicitis is treated with antibiotics and subsequent surgery.
Abdominal pain from appendicitis is often described as "a different pain I have never had before". The pain can be very intense and occur suddenly without much warning - it usually begins at the navel before it gradually worsens and changes position more towards the lower, right part of the abdomen. Coughing, sneezing, movement and pressure can aggravate the pain.
The affected person often reports that he feels unwell, dizzy and nauseous. As the condition worsens, vomiting can also occur.
Due to pain and general feeling of unwellness, it is common to lose appetite and appetite.
The stomach and intestines may lose much of their normal function due to pain and ongoing inflammation. This can cause constipation or diarrhea.
An ongoing inflammation or infection can provide a basis for the body to enter a defense mechanism where it causes fever - this is to fight inflammation. When you have a fever, it is also common to get a feeling of chills and chills in your body.
As the condition worsens, you may find that gas and ongoing inflammation cause the stomach to swell - there may also be a slight accumulation of fluid.
What can you do if you have appendicitis?
