Bipolar disorder is also known to be manic depressive. The condition is a long-term mental condition in which people who are affected go through different cycles with varying - often extreme - moods. The person may go from being in an extremely good mood and full of energy - and then turn around and go completely into the basement, with deep depression. The former is known as a manic state and the latter is a depressive state.

Symptoms of bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorder causes extreme mood swings between happiness and depression. When a person is manic, they are not just happy - manic state actually causes a number of symptoms such as:

  • sleep Problems
  • Poor concentration
  • Lots of energy
  • Frequent talking
  • Can't sit still
  • Increased risk behavior - e.g. by sex and increased spending

brain cancer

People who are manic are not necessarily aware of their own unusual behavior - this means that they are also not aware of any risks they take when they are in this condition. Symptoms of a depressive period are as follows:

  • Feeling down and sorry
  • Low energy and sense of action
  • sleep Problems
  • Think a lot about death and suicide
  • Tired and exhausted
  • Forget things
  • No happiness in everyday life

- Depressed? Seek help or therapy

The most important thing in case of suspicion of such a disorder is that the person affected has to talk to a professional therapist (psychiatrist / psychologist) or similar - this can also be useful to find out what is bothering the person. This is due to the increased risk of suicide that comes with having a person with bipolar disorder. In more acute cases of severe depression and the like where you think the person is a danger to themselves or others, you should contact the helpline Mental Health Helpline on telephone 116123, Church SOS or Psychiatric emergency room.
