This is how breast cancer can look and feel

A persistent hard lump that cannot be moved by pressure is the most common sign of breast cancer - other symptoms can be seen with the naked eye rather than physically felt. It is of course the case that the breasts may occasionally undergo some temporary changes - but if there are changes that persist, you should contact your GP. In any case, we want to emphasize that a mammogram or tomosynthesis can detect such a lump long before it can be felt. Know yourself and let the mammogram do the rest.

How to check the breasts for bullets and lumps

Regular self-examination is a good way to understand what is common to you and your breasts. If you notice any irregularities, especially hard bullets, you should contact your GP for further examination.

  • Place a pillow under your right shoulder and then place your right hand behind your head
  • Then use your left hand and fingers to examine thoroughly around the right breast
  • Use small circular motions and examine the entire chest region and armpit
  • Vary the pressure from light, medium and slightly harder
  • Also press the nipple and check for any fluid discharge

Examination of breasts

- In 2013, researchers at Oslo University Hospital presented results that showed that a new digital screening called tomosynthesis detected approximately 30 percent more tumors in the breast than normal digital mammography. In time, this examination will probably take over completely for the traditional mammography.

Symptoms of breast cancer

As mentioned, the most common symptom of breast cancer is a new lump or lump. If the bullet is hard, has irregular edges and does not hurt when touched, there is a greater chance that it may be cancer - but it is important to know that this varies. Some atypical breast cancer cells may be sore, soft and round. They can even be downright painful. This is why it is so important that you have new balls or changes in your breasts examined by a doctor.

Other possible symptoms of breast cancer:

  • Swelling in whole or part of the breast
  • Skin irritation and rash
  • Chest or nipple pain
  • That nipple changes and turns inward
  • Redness or thickening of the nipple or the skin of the breast
  • Outflow from the nipple

Sometimes breast cancer can spread to lymph nodes under the arms and around the collarbone. This can feel like a swelling or cool. Therefore, persistent swollen lymph nodes should also be examined by a physician.
