- Prolapse of the Neck and Severe Pain Between the Shoulder Blades

A reader asked us the following questions about neck prolapse and pain between the shoulder blades. Read what our experts answered about possible actions and exercises.

Information: prolapse occurs when the soft mass (nucleus pulposus) of an intervertebral disc passes through the thicker fibrous wall (annulus fibrosus) holding the mass inside. In the neck, especially the levels C5, C6 and C7 are affected. Depending on which nerve root is affected, you may have various nerve symptoms.

Reader: Hello. I have been diagnosed with prolapse in the neck in C5 / C6 after years of chronic and occasionally severe / acute pain between the shoulder blades, in the right shoulder and outwards in the arm. I experience burning pain between the shoulder blades, as well as radiating pain down the right arm - at times.

Daily aching and burning pains that are kept in check with painkillers. I have now been referred to physio, but wonder if it may have been chronic? or whether the prolapse comes and goes? In any case, this is experienced in terms of the intensity of the pain. Do you have any tricky tips / exercises I can do at home?

Can mention that I also have a severe M. Crohn and have only 2 meters of small intestine left due to x number of operations. I have Short Bowel Syndrome. I do not tolerate anti-inflammatory drugs due to inflammation of the intestines. The prolapse was discovered late, when the doctors put my pain in the "Crohns account" - unfortunately.

Alexander: It was sad to hear that you have been diagnosed with prolapse in the lower part of the neck. A prolapse will (if it does not receive the same loads again and again - something that is done quickly in our modern world) gradually heal, but it can take a very long time in certain periods. It is also necessary to train the support muscles to relieve the area.

We definitely think that you should go to the physiotherapist you have been recommended - but we are happy to recommend some exercises for you, which are adapted to you having a prolapse in the neck. Here (press here ), by the way, you can read more about physiotherapy and neck prolapse.

Said exercises should be easy for you to start with:

Alexander: Ok, sounds good. Remember to take a very calm session the first time you use the elastic on these exercises - as the muscles are often a little surprised the first time. Let us know if you have any questions or need more exercises.
