Chronic Illness and Invisible Illness

  • A guest article by Yvonne Barbala.

As a chronically ill person, I have personally experienced how to deal with the surprising transition from healthy to "invisibly ill". When I started this journey of illness, I experienced a sea of info and medical articles, but little personal experience about the situation itself. As a single mother, I had full and complete responsibility for everyday life to go around at the usual pace, and the freedom to fall with the storm was obviously no solution. I needed an understanding and a "conclusion book" of what in the world I had to do with, as well as how or what I had in store.

Big Words and Medical Jargon

Many big words as well as titles should explain how I should experience as well as handle this in my everyday life. As someone who had never heard of the disease title itself even before diagnosis, there was prolonged and cumbersome search for a human response. I was missing the little book that explained simply and directly about how to experience the impact personally.

I began to write poems about the feelings around it, as well as noted private thoughts on the subject. I am by no means a highly educated professional person, so the book is not about that. It's all about my private experience of living with Bekhterevs. The book started with a desire to help others who were in my situation, as I struggled, like many others, to explain in simplicity how it can be experienced to live with an invisible illness.

A Simple Book on a Complicated Themes

I wanted to create a small book that could simplify the perception of how it is experienced as a private person, but also so that one can more easily explain to one's loved ones. Let us put the focus a little away from the difficult words and titles, as well as create a sense of belonging and common understanding in the fight against the disease. The book is brief in the hope that the reader will have a little experience of me as a private person and how I as an individual interpret this situation.

"An honest and raw description wrapped in an easy-to-read filter"

This is my debut book, to test the water a bit if there is interest in the subject. I am working on my second book, which will be far more detailed and longer. "I was born of adversity" Which can be pre-ordered on my website AlleDisseOrdene.no

Sincerely,

Yvonne
