A good night's sleep depends on several factors

Getting a good night of quality sleep depends on several factors - stress level, room temperature, comfort - but perhaps most important is what you sleep on, namely the mattress. If you are looking for a new mattress, you know that there are an incredible number of different varieties out there - but how can you know which mattress is best for you?

1. Neutral position

First and foremost, it is important that the mattress supports your body in a neutral position - a position where your spine has a nice curve and where the shoulders, seat and head are supported in the correct position.

If the mattress is too soft, this can lead to you not receiving sufficient support and your body "sinking" into the mattress - which in turn causes the back and neck to lie in unfavorable positions. This may be involved in waking up with a tired back and stiff neck in the morning.

2. Harder mattress better against lower back pain

'A firmer mattress is better for those who struggle with long-term, chronic back pain'. This concluded a research study that compared how these people felt if they slept on a soft mattress compared to a harder mattress.

How hard a mattress is is measured on a scale of 10 (hardest) to 1 (softest). In the study, they used a medium-hard mattress measured at 5.6 on this scale. The test subjects who slept on this reported lower back pain than those who slept on softer mattresses.

3. Time for a new mattress?

How do you know if it's time to replace the mattress? If you wake up with pain in your back and neck, this may be a sign that your mattress is not particularly suitable for you.

Maybe you slept in another bed and felt a positive difference with less back pain in the morning? When you lie on a mattress that is right for you, it should almost feel as if you 'float' and have no pressure on your neck or back.

4. Latex mattress

Latex mattresses are made of natural or synthetic rubber. This type of mattress is known to provide very firm and consistent support for the body. It can also compete with tempura / memory foam mattresses when it comes to comfort level.

Perhaps the very best choice if you suffer from long-term back pain - because it provides the best combination of comfort and support.

5. Tempura mattress

Mattresses that adapt to your body are a popular choice. They are composed of different layers with varying foam density - these layers adapt to body weight and temperature, which results in higher comfort.

Often the choice for those affected by chronic fatigue and muscle syndromes - due to its ability to adapt to the person's body and support the right areas. One disadvantage of tempura mattresses is that they tend to get very hot during the night - so if you are struggling to get too hot at night, then this may not be the choice for you.

Summary

Today's mattresses are made to last a lifetime - but our bodies change over time and then you may want to adapt the mattress to your body. The best bed and mattress is the one where you are most comfortable and sleep best. Also remember that good sleep routines are important when it comes to giving your body and back the best possible rest and recovery.
