How Nurses Save Life Every Day

The nurses are doing a fantastic job! Here you can read more about how they save lives. May 12th was Nurse's Day - did you remember to congratulate or give a hug to a nurse you know? Share and like this on social media and remember to sign the nurse promise to support these great people who dedicate their lives to helping others.

1. Save lives both inside and outside the hospital

Nurses are highly trained to make difficult choices and keep a cool head in emergencies - their expertise can be invaluable in emergency situations both inside and outside the hospital. A good example of this can be in everyday situations - like this:

A man had put something in his throat when he was feeling unwell. Fortunately, there was a trained nurse present who knew the Heimlich maneuver and who could perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation afterwards (his heart had stopped) - until the ambulance arrived. The doctors at the hospital said that the nurse had saved the man's life.

2. Prevents illness and life-threatening complications

Nurses maintain regular contact with their patients - through a very hectic hospital day - and follow them up on all levels. At regular check-ups of their patients, studies have shown that there is a significantly lower risk of infections, deep vein thrombosis, heart attack and death. This frequent contact between patient and nurse means that early signs of potentially debilitating development of disease can be detected early and prevented. Prevention saves even more lives than emergency medicine - but there is not as much focus on it in Gray's anatomy, is there?

Maybe there is more sexy with a scalpel than preventative measures?

An essential link between doctor, patient and patient's family

The nurse spends more time with the patient - and the patient's family. They are therefore an important piece that keeps the balance in communication and information distribution between the various parties. This leads to better flow in both treatment and assessment phases.

4. Work at all hours of the day - for you!

Nurses and health professionals work around the clock to provide you and yours with the help they need in emergencies. This is of course demanding because this also involves episodic work at night and on weekends - which can go beyond the everyday and the circadian rhythm. So if you know a nurse who is a little tired these days, we encourage you to do something nice for them - or give them a good hug!
