Reader: When can I start exercising again after a back surgery?

Hi! I had surgery in the back before 6 weeks ago, still have pain in my thighs and pelvis. Will be going to a fitness center in a few days. Can I start exercising even if I am in pain?

Vondt.net's answer:

The rehabilitation time after a back surgery depends on several factors, including

1) Where in the back the procedure was done - and what kind of surgery was chosen. Some procedures (eg peephole surgery - provide minimal scar tissue and damaged tissue in the operated area. Other - larger - procedures may leave more damaged tissue and scar tissue that will not have the same recovery ability and relatively fast healing time as the natural tissue had. Therefore a major operation will lead to a longer recovery time before you can gradually increase the training after an operation. We always recommend that you go to a clinic for setting up a training program with regular checks to see that it is progressing correctly.

2) Age and biological composition of the patient - with age, unfortunately, the healing ability and repair ability in the body decreases. This means that a higher life expectancy is often associated with the need for somewhat more recovery than was done previously.

3) How trained the patient was before the procedure: Several studies have shown that preoperative training (pre-surgical training) leads to faster recovery and a faster return to normal exercise routines and daily functioning.

4) If you can work out with pain? This depends on how severe the pain is and whether you feel that it is relevant to the procedure. If you experience pain during exercise, you are advised to contact the clinician for review of exercise program, routine and performance techniques. We wish you good recovery and good luck in the rehabilitation.
