I Get Dizzy When I Get Up Quickly - Should I Be Concerned?

Many people experience temporary dizziness when they get up quickly from a sitting or supine position. Getting dizzy when getting up quickly is relatively common, but if it occurs frequently you should have your blood pressure checked by your GP, as uneven blood pressure can be severe, especially for the elderly, partly due to the increased chance of fainting and falling.

When you get up quickly, the blood vessels and the heart must contract to supply the body and the brain with blood. This can take some time in the morning and one can therefore experience a temporary dizziness before the brain receives the adequate blood supply it wants.

- Have your blood pressure checked

If you experience this type of dizziness regularly, you should have your blood pressure and heart function examined by your doctor. This is because organs, extremities and, most importantly, your brain depend on your blood pressure being even and high enough to be regularly supplied with blood and oxygen. If you experience postural dizziness, your doctor will measure your blood pressure in a supine, sitting and standing position - and then examine that this is not constantly lower when you are lying down or sitting down.

Blood pressure is a measure of the power inside your blood vessels every time your heart beats. A normal blood pressure is 120 mmHg overpressure and 80 mmHg suppression. Overpressure (systolic pressure), which is the first number, is a measurement of arterial pressure when the heart beats and blood vessels are full. Suppression (diastolic pressure), which is the second number in the measurement, is the pressure in the blood vessels as the heart rests between the heartbeats.

A good piece of advice is to take some time in the morning to get up from a lying to a standing position. Feel free to sit for 30 seconds before getting up completely. This is because the blood pressure has been low through the night when you sleep and when you get up quickly then suddenly "all man to the pumps" - if the blood vessels can not meet the requirements you may experience temporary dizziness due to less blood supply to the brain.

What can I do even against pain in muscles, nerves and joints?

1. General exercise, specific exercise, stretching and activity are recommended, but stay within the pain limit. Two walks a day of 20-40 minutes make good for the whole body and sore muscles.

2. Trigger point / massage balls we strongly recommend - they come in different sizes so you can hit well even on all parts of the body. There is no better self help than this! We recommend the following (click the image below) - which is a complete set of 5 trigger point / massage balls in different sizes:

3. Training: Specific training with training tricks of various opponents (such as this complete set of 6 knits of different resistance) can help you train strength and function. Knit training often involves more specific training, which in turn can lead to more effective injury prevention and pain reduction.

4. Pain Relief - Cooling: Biofreeze is a natural product that can relieve pain by cooling the area gently. Cooling is especially recommended when the pain is very severe. When they have calmed down then heat treatment is recommended - it is therefore advisable to have both cooling and heating available.

5. Pain Relief - Heating: Warming up tight muscles can increase blood circulation and reduce pain. We recommend the following reusable hot / cold gasket (click here to read more about it) - which can be used both for cooling (can be frozen) and for heating (can be heated in the microwave).

6. Prevention and healing: Compression noise like that like this can increase blood circulation to the affected area, thereby speeding up the natural healing of injured or worn muscles and tendons.
