groin Hernia

groin Hernia

Inguinal hernia (Bulging of the intestine in the inguinal region on the left or right side)

Groin fracture is a condition in which a part of the intestines has bulged out and gone through the muscle wall. Inguinal hernia occurs in the area where the abdomen meets the thigh. A hernia thus indicates that part of the intestine has pushed through a weaker part of the muscle wall - which can naturally give clear groin pain and a swelling or lump in the area that is more painful when coughing or sneezing. Inguinal hernia occurs in a weaker area called 'Hesselbach's triangle' where several abdominal muscles attach to the groin. Inguinal hernia can occur on both the left and right side.

Causes of inguinal hernia

Hernia in the groin is closely linked to elevated abdominal pressure combined with too weak support muscles. Obesity, chronic cough, pregnancy, heavy lifting (in a forwardly bent dysergonomic position) and hard pressure to get stool out of the toilet can all be direct causes for the intestine to break through the muscle wall. These strains and risk factors often occur in interaction with each other, as several of the points belong indirectly together. By trying and weeding out the causes that affect oneself, one can reduce the load on the intestines and thus ensure a reduced chance of inguinal hernia or aggravation of hernia.

Who is afflicted with groin?

Broken hernia most often affects men (10: 1) and usually occurs after the age of 40. This is because men have a significantly weaker wall in the affected area.

Symptoms of inguinal hernia

The most characteristic symptom of inguinal hernia is a clear swelling in the groin which can be aggravated by coughing, internal pressure and standing position. It is rare that they are very painful, but they can give a feeling of discomfort in the area. The swelling or 'ball' normally disappears when you lie down. If it is not possible to make the bullet 'disappear' combined with severe groin pain, you should contact the emergency room - as this may require surgery. If there is significant pain, this indicates that it is part of the intestine that is in a pinch and thus does not get enough oxygen - this is a problem where surgeons must perform an operation to release the pressure from the intestine to release the blood supply to the area.

If aggravated groin hernia worsens, nearby structures such as intestines, liver and the like may be 'pinched' together with the hernia - which can lead to an internal blockage. If this occurs, you may be at risk of developing ischemia (due to lack of blood circulation) and cold sores - a development that can have fatal consequences if no surgery is performed. The chance of such aggravation of inguinal hernia is considered very low - down to 0.2% according to some studies.

Diagnosis of groin hernia

Inguinal hernia is divided into direct inguinal hernia or indirect inguinal hernia depending on which area the intestine has bulged through. A clinical examination will show a local lump in the area that can be tender and slightly painful to the touch - with coughing or sneezing you can feel the hernia rising.

Image diagnostic examination of groin hernia (X-ray, MRI, CT or ultrasound)

For inguinal hernia, it is quite standard to use diagnostic ultrasound - as this gives a dynamic picture of the intestine and the affected area. One MRI examination is also common to use for a good visualization of the problem in question and nearby structures.

- In the picture above, we see an MRI examination of a groin hernia. The first image shows what the area looks like at rest and the second image shows how the hernia bulges outwards when the patient recreates a higher internal abdominal pressure (see the arrow at the top right).

Treatment of hernia

We divide the treatment of inguinal hernia into conservative treatment and invasive treatment. By conservative treatment is meant low risk treatment modalities. Invasive treatment refers to procedures that involve greater risk, such as surgery and surgery.

Conservative treatment fall into the following categories:

- Compression Noise: Clothes that provide compression around the affected area can prevent further deterioration and provide stability around the groin. This is used among other things by athletes and can be useful against minor hernia.

- Wait and see: Until recently, surgery was the recommended procedure, but due to the possibility of complications and injuries (including post-operative hernia pain) due to the procedure, the guidelines have been changed to wait and see how the situation develops before possible surgically.

Invasive treatment is divided into the following measures:

- Operation: The main purpose of a surgical procedure is to put the bulge in place before closing the muscle wall afterwards. This can be done on a number of specific operating methods that we will not go into further detail here.

The main purpose of treating inguinal hernia is to remove the irritation in the area and then let the region heal itself, which will reduce both pain and inflammation. Cold treatment can provide pain relief for sore muscles. Blue. Biofreeze is a popular product. One should always try conservative treatment for a long time before resorting to invasive procedures (surgery and surgery), but in some cases this is the only way out.

How to prevent hernia?

There are several steps that can be taken to prevent this condition.

- Use compression clothing for training and heavy lifting

Lift ergonomically and avoid poor lifting positions with high abdominal pressure

- Provide good stomach function, then constipation

Exercises for groin hernia

There are no exercises directly aimed at preventing hernia. The key, on the other hand, lies in lifting and exercising properly, as low abdominal exercise reduces the chance of experiencing worsening of the groin.

What can I do even for muscle and joint pain?

1. General exercise, specific exercise, stretching and activity are recommended, but stay within the pain limit. Two walks a day of 20-40 minutes make good for the whole body and sore muscles.

2. Trigger point / massage balls we strongly recommend - they come in different sizes so you can hit well even on all parts of the body. There is no better self help than this! We recommend the following (click the image below) - which is a complete set of 5 trigger point / massage balls in different sizes:

3. Training: Specific training with training tricks of various opponents (such as this complete set of 6 knits of different resistance) can help you train strength and function. Knit training often involves more specific training, which in turn can lead to more effective injury prevention and pain reduction.

4. Pain Relief - Cooling: Biofreeze is a natural product that can relieve pain by cooling the area gently. Cooling is especially recommended when the pain is very severe. When they have calmed down then heat treatment is recommended - it is therefore advisable to have both cooling and heating available.

5. Pain Relief - Heating: Warming up tight muscles can increase blood circulation and reduce pain. We recommend the following reusable hot / cold gasket (click here to read more about it) - which can be used both for cooling (can be frozen) and for heating (can be heated in the microwave).

  1. Christine says:

Hello. A few days ago I had an acute pain on the right side that radiated from the groin down. It hurts a lot at night when I lie down and have to move (turn around, for example). Has been Ok during the day and not known much about it. Tonight it got much worse. Could barely get up from bed until morning. Called the emergency room who said I should take 2 x 500mg Paracet + 2 x 200mg Ibux together. I have felt the pain all day, even when I have been walking and sitting. But more uncomfortable than painful. Now I lie in bed with my head slightly up and every movement hurts. Also when I lie completely still. I also feel a lot of pain on the right side of the abdomen at the top. I see no visible bullets but am very tender.
