Infant torticollis - Symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.

Infant torticollis is evident shortly after birth. The infant holds the neck in a side-bent averting position due to a shortened neck muscle (SCM - sternocleidomastoid). One theory is that this may be due to ischemia due to misplacement in the mother's abdomen or trauma at birth.

Treatment of infant torticollis.

Treatment usually takes place in collaboration with a pediatric physiotherapist who can teach parents to perform daily stretching exercises aimed at tight muscles and correction exercises to strengthen relevant muscles. Light muscle work can also be helpful in certain cases. In extreme cases, surgery may be required to release the distal attachments of the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
