Pain in the mouth

Pain in the mouth

Sore mouth

Mouth pain and mouth pain can be both painful and very troublesome. Pain in the mouth can be caused by ulcers, infection, viruses, malnutrition, dental problems and injury.

Some of the most common causes are injury, trauma, poor dental hygiene and infection - but in rarer cases it can be due to Crohn's disease, Behcet's syndrome, lupus and even less often, cancer. Some communicable diseases such as herpes zoster and syphilis can also appear as mouth ulcers - the former then usually appear in the corner of the mouth or at the lips. If the condition persists or worsens, you should consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Where and what is the mouth?

The mouth has two main tasks: 1) preparing food for digestion and 2) being our primary communication device in collaboration with obligations, throat, jaw and lips.

What is pain?

Pain is the body's way of saying that you have injured yourself or are about to hurt you. This is an indication that you are doing something wrong. Not listening to the body's pain signals is really asking for trouble, as this is its only way to communicate that something is wrong. This applies to pain and aches all over the body, not just back pain as so many people think. If you do not take the pain signals seriously, it can lead to long-term problems, and you risk the pain becoming chronic. Naturally, there is a difference between tenderness and pain - most of us can tell the difference between the two.

When the pain is attenuated, it is necessary to weed out the cause of the problem - maybe you need to sharpen up when it comes to oral and dental hygiene?

Toothbrush

- Good dental hygiene is important to prevent bacterial build-up and to prevent decay of the teeth.

Some common causes / diagnoses of mouth pain are:

Poor dental health - cavities or gum disease

Drug use (certain medications can cause mouth ulcers - including methotrexate)

Mild infection

Mouth ulcers (perhaps the most common cause of mouth pain - may be due to minor injury, irritation, herpes zoster, weakened immune system and a number of other conditions)

Referred pain from the jaw and jaw muscles (i.a. masseter (gum) myalgia may cause referred pain or 'pressure' against mouth / cheek)

Trauma (biting, irritation, burns and the like)

Virus

Pain in the teeth

* Mouth sores often occur during periods of little sleep, a lot of stress and maybe even an infection in the body - that is, at times when the immune system has been reduced.

Rare causes of mouth pain:

Anemia (malnutrition can give rise to anemia) '

Behcet's syndrome

Crohn's disease

Herpes labialis (Herpes outbreaks on or in the lips)

Infection (often with high CRP and fever)

Irritation from tooth regulation

Cancer

Lupus

Nervous pain (including trigeminal neuralgia)

Syphilis

Make sure you do not go with a sore mouth for a long time, rather consult a clinician and diagnose the cause of the pain - this way you will make the necessary changes as early as possible before it has a chance to develop further.

Remember: If swollen tongue (eg. in case of allergic reactions) then it is important (perhaps vital?) to keep in mind that ice cubes can slow the swelling and give the person better time before it potentially clogs up and causes respiratory problems for the person.
