Pain in the lips
Pain in the lips and lip pain can be both painful and very bothersome. Pain in the lips can be caused by sores, infection, herpes, viruses, malnutrition and injury.
Some of the most common causes are mouth ulcers, chapped lips and herpes simplex infection - but in rarer cases it can be due to fever, Satchmo's syndrome, Raynaud's and even less often, cancer. Some communicable diseases such as herpes zoster and syphilis can also appear as mouth ulcers - the former then usually appear in the corner of the mouth or at the lips. If the condition persists or worsens, you should consult a qualified healthcare professional.
Where and what are the lips?
The lips are part of the mouth. They are used in the articulation of words and sounds, as well as food intake.

What is pain?
Pain is the body's way of saying that you have injured yourself or are about to hurt you. This is an indication that you are doing something wrong. Not listening to the body's pain signals is really asking for trouble, as this is its only way to communicate that something is wrong. This applies to pain and aches all over the body, not just back pain as so many people think. If you do not take the pain signals seriously, it can lead to long-term problems, and you risk the pain becoming chronic. Naturally, there is a difference between tenderness and pain - most of us can tell the difference between the two.
When the pain is attenuated, it is necessary to weed out the cause of the problem - maybe you need to sharpen up when it comes to oral and dental hygiene?
Some common causes / diagnoses of lip pain are:
Eczema
Herpes labialis (gives characteristic sores on the lip - see picture below)
Keilitis (inflammation of the lips)
Drug use (certain medications can cause mouth ulcers - including methotrexate)
Mild infection
Mouth ulcers (perhaps the most common cause of pain in the lips - may be due to minor injury, irritation, herpes virus, reduced immune system and a number of other conditions)
Referred pain from the jaw and jaw muscles (i.a. masseter (gum) myalgia may cause referred pain or 'pressure' against mouth / cheek)
Trauma (biting, irritation, burns and the like)
Virus
* Mouth sores often occur during periods of little sleep, a lot of stress and maybe even an infection in the body - that is, at times when the immune system has been reduced.
In the picture: Mouth ulcers caused by herpes virus. It is called Herpes Labialis.
Rare causes of pain in the lips:
Anemia (malnutrition may cause anemia)
Behcet's syndrome
Crohn's disease
Infection (often with high CRP and fever)
Cancer (eg Glucagonom or oral cancer)
Lupus
Nervous pain (including trigeminal neuralgia)
Syphilis
Make sure you do not walk with sore lips for a long time, rather consult a clinician and diagnose the cause of the pain - this way you will make the necessary changes as early as possible before it has a chance to develop further.
