How To Recognize The Symptoms Of Gastric Ulcer

Here you will learn the signs and symptoms of stomach ulcers. A diagnosis where an area of the stomach is damaged - and which causes abdominal pain in the damaged area. The pain is often described as burning and gnawing pain. Indigestion also occurs, often in combination with acid reflux - but the symptoms of stomach ulcers vary somewhat from person to person.

A stomach ulcer is an injury to the membrane on the inside of the stomach. It is when this membrane is damaged that stomach acid, which is normally used to break down food and microbes, can lead to destruction and subsequent ulcers in the stomach. Ulcers can also occur in the small intestine.

Symptoms of gastric ulcer

The most characteristic symptom of stomach ulcers is indigestion - which can lead to both abdominal pain and discomfort. Another typical symptom occurs in the front of the chest and is easy to misinterpret as acid regurgitation - but in stomach ulcers this feeling will be further down.

  • indigestion
  • Abdominal pain and discomfort
  • Burning, nagging pain low in the chest
  • Person can often describe a feeling of hunger
  • Aggravation by increased stomach acid

stomach ache

Most diagnoses of gastric ulcer are made after the condition has progressed so far that there has been bleeding in the gastric ulcer. In the absence of treatment, the damage to the membrane can develop and lead to a hole across the stomach - called perforation. If the latter occurs, then this is an emergency situation that needs immediate medical attention. Symptoms of bleeding stomach ulcers are:

  • Anemic - Feels exhausted and low on energy
  • Blood in vomit (Severe - consult a doctor or emergency room)
  • Blood in stool (Severe - consult a doctor or emergency room)

Causes of peptic ulcer

There are two main reasons for developing stomach ulcers:

  • bacteria Heliobacter pylori (H. pylori)
  • Painkillers - especially in the class NSAIDS (the two most well-known are Ibux / ibuprofen and aspirin)

The reason that painkillers can work negatively for the stomach is that they are designed to block an enzyme called COX. Which helps against inflammation, but which also leads to reduced production of the cells that make up the membrane in the stomach - which in turn leads to you being more prone to membrane damage. Other risk factors for and affected by the condition are alcohol, smoking and stress.
