Eye Migraine (Migraine with Aura) | Cause, diagnoses, symptoms and treatment

Migraine attacks that include visual disturbances are called eye migraines or migraines with aura. Eye migraines can occur both with and without the characteristic headache of regular migraine. Read more about symptoms, cause, treatment and how to prevent eye migraines here in this article.

At eye migrants, also known as migraine with aura, one will experience flashes of light, dots, stripes or stars in front of the eyes. Some also describe that they experience so-called blind zones being enlarged and more pronounced in the field of view. About 20% of those with migraine headaches reports that they experience such symptoms before or during a seizure. The cause is unknown, but it is believed that it has increased electrical activity and electrolyte deficiencies (including too little magnesium due to the brain using much larger amounts than in others) in the brain - as with normal migraines.

Naturally, such symptoms can go beyond everyday things like reading, writing or driving a car. However, we point out that eye migraines are not the same as the rarer variant called retinal migraine (single eye migraine with total vision loss in one eye) - where the latter can be a clinical sign of a much more serious medical diagnosis, such as a blood clot, stroke or loosened retina. If you experience vision loss in one eye, you should seek medical attention immediately.

Causes and Triggers: Why Do I Get Eye Migrants?

Discussion with health professionals

There are a number of known causes and triggers that are linked to the occurrence of eye migrations. These include:

Genetics and Family Occurrence

meningitis

If some other family members or someone further back in your family tree is affected by migraines - then research has proven that you have a higher chance of being affected by it yourself (1). Eye migraines, like normal migraines, can therefore be said to be "in the family" and it is also the case that any children will have a higher chance of getting this diagnosis.

Change in hormone levels in the body

nausea

Migraine attacks have also been linked to estrogen - a female sex hormone. This hormone controls and affects chemicals in the brain that control pain sensitivity and the transmission of pain signals. If there is a hormonal imbalance, for example due to the menstrual cycle, pregnancy or menopause, then this could help to cause migraine attacks. Hormone levels in the body are also affected by diet, birth control pills and possibly hormone therapy.

Triggers: What triggers your migraine attacks?

You should know this about migraine

One thing to chart and find out in relation to their migraine attacks is what triggers (triggers) them. There is a great diversity of people in relation to what triggers migraine, and there may also be combinations of various factors behind the attacks. Some of the best known triggers include:

  • Alcohol (especially red wine is heavily linked as a migraine trigger)
  • Loud noises
  • Caffeine (either too much or due to withdrawal)
  • Powerful smells
  • Artificial sweetening (for example, sugars)
  • Foods high in monosodium glutamate (such as spices and junk food)
  • Foods containing nitrates (such as sausages, salami and bacon)
  • Foods containing tyramine (old cheeses, sausages, smoked fish, soy products and certain types of beans)
  • Bright light
  • Stress and anxiety - or, surprisingly for many, rest after long periods of stress
  • Changes of and barometric pressure changes in the atmosphere

A good suggestion to find out what your migraine triggers are is to keep a headache diary. In this you write down, among other things, what you eat, exercise, sleep hygiene and the menstrual cycle.

Eye migraines and Aura

The use of the eye migraine diagnosis may vary somewhat from person to person. Some refer to migraine with aura as the eye migraine. This aura usually occurs about 10 to 30 minutes before a migraine starts and typical symptoms of such aura can include:

  • A sense of lightness and not being fully present
  • Impaired feeling above smells, touch and taste
  • Dot or numbness of face or hands
  • Visual disturbances in the form of blind zones, flashing lights and other light formations.

The Difference in Migraines and Common Tension Headaches

headaches and headaches

Some people misuse the word migraine when referring to their own headache - because as those with real migraines know, there is a marked difference between these two diagnoses. Tension headaches (often caused by stress necks and the like) provide the basis for a mild to moderate headache. This type of headache is often disruptive, but normally does not lead to sound and light sensitivity, such as in migraines where one has to lie in a cool, dark room to cushion the overactivity in the brain.

Migraine attacks are thus significantly stronger forms of headaches - which range from moderate to significant headaches. This is characteristically one-sided and can include throbbing, throbbing pain in the back of the head, temple and / or forehead - as well as subsequent nausea and vomiting. It often hurts so much in the head that the person has to lie down in his bed in a dark room with a cooling ice pack on his head (by cooling down, the electrical overactivity in the brain that works to relieve the person is lowered) or a migraine mask.

This is an example of a so-called "migraine mask»Which is applied over the eyes (mask that one has in the freezer and which is specially adapted to relieve migraine and headaches) - this will reduce some of the pain signals and relieve some of your tension. Secondary headache

X-ray of the forehead and head - Photo Wiki

Secondary headache is a term used to explain that the headache is due to an underlying medical condition. This may include:

  • Anatomical abnormalities of the head, neck or spine
  • Aneurysm (dilation or bulge of a vein due to weakness of the blood vessel wall)
  • Seizures (for example, epilepsy)
  • Arterial dissection (a tear in an artery that provides blood circulation to the brain)
  • Inflammation of the brain due to meningitis or other infections
  • Poisoning
  • Ischemic stroke (blocked blood supply in the brain)
  • Cerebral haemorrhage (fractured artery in the brain)
  • gliomas
  • Head trauma and Concussion
  • Hydrocephalus (increased spinal fluid accumulation in the brain)
  • Leakage of spinal fluid
  • trigeminal neuralgia
  • Vasculitis (inflammation of blood vessels and veins)

Treatment and Prevention of Eye Migrants

We divide treatment and prevention into four main categories.

  • Physical treatment of muscles and joints: Many people with migraine experience a clear connection between tense and tight neck muscles, stiff joints and increased incidence of migraine attacks. It has been documented that painful muscles have increased electrical activity, and based on our knowledge that such activity is a factor in migraine, it is advantageous to try and avoid too much damage to the muscles and reduced joint mobility. A modern chiropractor or physiotherapist can help you with such musculoskeletal ailments.

  • Diet: In the trigger section of this article we have mentioned how a healthy diet without known triggers can reduce the incidence of migraine attacks and headaches. Many people experience particularly good effects of cutting back on alcohol, caffeine and eating more fruits and vegetables.

  • Medication (including common migraine drugs such as Imigran and Maxalt): If you have been diagnosed with migraine, your doctor can help you identify any drug that can help you fight migraine.

  • Stress reduction and soothing self-measures: There are a number of measures and activities that can help reduce the stress levels in the body and brain. Some good examples include hot water pool training, yoga and breathing techniques. We also recommend, as mentioned earlier, the cooling of the head and neck if you feel that you are about to have a seizure.

Prognosis

If you have regular eye migraine attacks then we strongly recommend that you bring this up with your GP for a review. Your doctor may help to rule out that these are more serious diagnoses and then you can focus on measures that provide symptom relief and functional improvement. If you experience sudden vision loss, blindness in one eye or difficulty in thinking clearly, you are advised to seek medical help.

Reusable Gel Combination Gasket (Heat & Cold Gasket)

Heat can increase blood circulation to tight and sore muscles - but in other situations, with more acute pain, cooling is recommended, as it reduces the transmission of pain signals. Due to the fact that these can also be used as a cold pack to calm down swelling, we recommend these.
