Tarsal tunnel syndrome - Image, definition, measures, treatment.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome, also known as posterior tibial neuralgia, is caused by compression of the tibial nerve that passes through the tarsal tunnel.

It then usually occurs due to repetitive loads that put pressure on the inside of the sole of the foot / heel - in the region where the tarsal tunnel is located, ie behind the medial malleolus. Treatment of tarsal tunnel syndrome involves relief from the causative cause, rest, mobilization and training of the muscles involved, specific nerve mobilization exercises, as well as possible sole adaptation to correct the arch of the foot - exercises to strengthen the arch of the foot can also be helpful.

The picture above illustrates where the tarsal tunnel lies and what structures are embraced by it. We find this on the inside of the medial malleolus (the bone lump on the inside of the ankle). We find the tibial artery, tibial nerve, posterior tibialis, flexor digitorum longus and flexor hallucis longus.

Did you know? - A differential diagnosis for tarsal tunnel syndrome is plantar fascite.

Definition:

Tarsal tunnel syndrome: A form of compressional neuropathy (nerve disease due to nerve compression) in the ankle and foot.

Tiltak:

One of the most important things about overload injuries is that you simply cut down on the activity that caused the injury, this can be done by making ergonomic changes in the workplace or taking a break from the movements that hurt. However, it is important not to stop completely, as this hurts more than good in the long run.

Treatment:

As mentioned before, treatment of tarsal tunnel syndrome involves relief from the causative cause, rest, mobilization and training of the muscles involved, specific nerve mobilization exercises, as well as possible sole adaptation to straighten the arch of the foot. Anti-inflammatory drugs may be applicable at some stage of the problem.

Self-treatment?

SHIATSU FOOT MASSAGE EQUIPMENT can be helpful for you with poor blood circulation in your feet. Low circulation can lead to poor healing in soft tissue, and therefore pain.

This appliance delivers an in-depth shiatsu massage of the foot leaves and your feet. It also has built-in heat treatment that you can choose to use for extra effect.

Treatment modalities: Evidence / studies.

A study published in the Journal of Manipulative Physiology in 2011 showed that conservative treatment, with supplemental tibial nerve mobilization and sole adaptation, had a positive effect. (Kurval et al, 2011)
