Lupus nephritis
Lupus nephritis, also called SLE nephritis, is an autoimmune inflammation of the kidneys caused by systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It is a form of glomerulonephritis where the glomerulus is inflamed. It is said that lupus nephritis is a secondary condition, caused by SLE.
Symptoms of lupus nephritis
The disease often causes symptoms associated with kidney problems, such as foamy urine (protein and / or blood may occur), fever, edema, high blood pressure, joint pain, muscle injuries and rashes.
If the condition is not treated, the symptoms will gradually worsen until there is significant renal impairment and possible renal failure.
Clinical signs
As mentioned above under 'symptoms'.
Diagnosis and cause
The diagnosis is made through a series of examinations (including blood tests), lab tests, urine analysis and thorough history. X-ray imaging and diagnostic ultrasound imaging were also used to analyze the kidneys. A typical positive urine sample will show red blood cells and protein in the urine.
The reason is genetic.
Who is affected by the disease?
The disease is directly related to those affected by the autoimmune disease systemic lupus erythematosus. The condition affects approximately 3 in 10000 people.
Treatment
Medication treatment with corticosteroids and immunosuppressive drugs is the most common form of treatment. Particularly mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), cyclophosphamide and azathioprine are used.
The most common form of treatment for autoimmune conditions is included immunosuppression - that is, drugs and measures that limit and cushion the body's own defense system. Gene therapy that limits inflammatory processes in immune cells has shown great progress in recent times, often in combination with increased activation of anti-inflammatory genes and processes.
