Hydradenitis suppurativa (Acne inversa)

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a rare chronic skin condition that causes clusters of sore throats full of pus in sweat gland areas - such as under the arms, under the breasts, inside the thighs, groin or buttocks.

The condition is not contagious. The diagnosis is believed to be an autoimmune skin disease, but not all researchers fully agree on this.

Symptoms of Hidradenitis suppurativa (Acne inversa)

Hidradenitis suppurativa rash, in the form of sores, can be painful and can persist for a long time - to varying degrees - sometimes for several years, before the plaster suddenly flows out of the sores. This can lead to open wounds that do not heal - which in turn can lead to permanent scars in affected areas.

Persistent, untreated episodes can cause the condition to become chronic.

See 'symptoms'.

Diagnosis and cause

The diagnosis is confirmed through a thorough history and clinical examination. The cause is not completely known - but it is believed that there is an underlying autoimmune response behind it.

Who is affected by the disease?

The disease usually affects people in their late teens or early 20s.

Treatment

The condition can be treated through lifestyle changes, drug treatment, radiotherapy, laser therapy or surgery.

The most common form of treatment for autoimmune conditions is included immunosuppression - that is, drugs and measures that limit and cushion the body's own defense system. Gene therapy that limits inflammatory processes in immune cells has shown great progress in recent times, often in combination with increased activation of anti-inflammatory genes and processes.
