Dermatitis herpetiformis (Duhrings disease)

Dermatitis herpetiformis, also known as Duhrings disease, is a chronic autoimmune skin disease characterized by reddish, fluid-filled blisters. The condition is not related to the herpes virus - the name just means that the inflammation of the skin is similar to that seen in herpes zoster. The condition is directly linked to celiac disease and gluten intake.

Symptoms of dermatitis herpetiformis (Duhrings disease)

The disease is characterized by intensely itchy, chronic blistering rash that normally affects the buttocks, back of the neck, scalp, elbows, knees, back and / or face. The blades vary in appearance and can be anything from tiny to as large as 1 cm in diameter.

The disease is aggravated by gluten intake and can often occur with the usual symptoms affecting those with celiac disease.

See 'symptoms'.

Diagnosis and cause

The diagnosis is confirmed through a blood test and a skin biopsy. It is often misinterpreted as rash, dermatitis, eczema or drug-induced skin rash.

Who is affected by the disease?

The first symptoms typically occur at the age of 20 - 30 years. The condition is directly linked to those with gluten allergy (celiac disease).

Treatment

Dapsone - a drug that was also used to treat leprosy - is the most effective form of treatment. In fact, it is so effective that within 2-3 days the itching should have subsided considerably. Researchers themselves have reported that they do not understand why this drug is so effective against this non-bacterial condition - as Dapsone is considered a form of antibiotics.

The person must also walk on one strict gluten-free diet, since the condition is directly related to celiac disease.

The most common form of treatment for autoimmune conditions is included immunosuppression - that is, drugs and measures that limit and cushion the body's own defense system. Gene therapy that limits inflammatory processes in immune cells has shown great progress in recent times, often in combination with increased activation of anti-inflammatory genes and processes.
