Cherry Lowers The Chance of Gout

A study published in the research journal Arthritis & Rheumatism has shown that eating cherries can have a very healing effect against, among other things, gout. Eating cherries for just 2 days (!) During the year led to a 35% reduction in the chance of developing gout.

Gout is one of the most common forms of arthritis - this form of gout is caused by too much uric acid in the body. Increased incidence of uric acid in the body can lead to uric acid crystals in the joints, most often in the big toe. Uric acid build-up (called tophi) that looks like small lumps under the skin.

An important study to show the effect of natural supplements

Many natural supplements can do much of the same as the round white pills and medications - without side effects. This study showed that cherries, due to their high content of antioxidants and natural anti-inflammatory effects, have a role to play in the treatment and prevention of gout forms - including gout.

The study followed participants over 1 year

The study evaluated 633 participants over an entire calendar year. They were followed up on points such as symptoms, incidence, risk factors, medications and naturally enough, intake of cherries - both what kind of intake (natural versus extract) and how often. The researchers decided that one serving of cherries was half a cup - or 10-12 cherries.

Cherry intake = Less chance of gout

When they followed up the group after 1 year, the statistics showed that those who ate cherries - in as little as 2 servings in one year - had a 35% lower chance of relapse and flare-ups of gout. It was naturally seen that a larger intake of cherries - over time - was also linked to a decrease in gout. When you combined cherry intake with allopurinol (a drug that lowers the uric acid content) you saw a decrease of as much as 75% in gout attacks.

Conclusion

Diet is important for those suffering from gout. People with a gout diagnosis should focus on eating anti-inflammatory foods and having a diet high in antioxidants. We are looking forward to larger randomized trials to be absolutely sure what cherries can do for those with gout - but we have to say that it looks very promising!
