5 Delicious Health Benefits By Eating Honey

Applying honey to the skin in the treatment of injuries has been used since ancient Egypt - and is still frequently used to this day. In a larger review study from 2015, they reviewed 26 studies that evaluated the effect of honey in the treatment of wound injuries. (1) The study concluded that honey is most effective when it comes to promoting healing of moderate burns and wounds in which there has been infection.

 

Other studies have shown that honey is an effective treatment for diabetic foot ulcers - a wound that can occur on the feet of those affected by type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The studies showed up to 97% healing. (2) The researchers believe that this effect is due to honey's anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as its ability to nourish the tissues of the skin.

 

And as if that wasn't enough, research has also shown that honey is an effective treatment for psoriasis, hemorrhoids and herpes wounds (e.g. mouth ulcer, herpes labialis). (3)

 

So even though these are studies on par with those done by pharmaceutical companies, you might have never heard of them or had it recommended by a doctor? This is because then less synthetic drugs would be sold, and we do not want that.

 

2. Natural honey contains a high number of antioxidants

High quality honey contains a number of antioxidants. These antioxidants help the body fight free radicals and contribute to healthy health. Studies have shown that a high intake of these antioxidants is linked to a reduced risk of heart attack, stroke and certain types of cancer. (4)

 

Based on these clinical studies, one can conclude that eating honey in controlled amounts (remember that it contains a lot of carbohydrates) could have a positive, long-term impact on health.

 

3. Honey can relieve cough and symptoms of respiratory infections

Hosting and sore throat are a common problem for both adults and children with respiratory infections. It can greatly affect sleep quality and energy levels. Several studies have proven that honey is more effective than regular cough medications. (5, 6) We must also keep in mind that honey has no reported side effects unlike most drugs. Honey can thus be a very good and natural alternative to cough medicine.

A high blood pressure can increase the chances of heart disease. Honey has, in studies, shown the ability to lower blood pressure in both humans and animals. (8, 9)

 

5. Honey can contribute to improved heart health

Cardiovascular disease is the world's leading cause of death. Several studies have shown that antioxidants, which we find a lot in, including honey, can help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke by preventing the formation of blood clots. (4) An animal study showed that honey protected the heart from oxidative stress (7).

 

A high content of antioxidants is very healthy for you, but you get it in you by eating a high content of fruits and vegetables - not honey. Still, it can be helpful to replace refined sugar with honey in the situations you use this.

The story behind avocados

The avocado is originally from the south of Mexico. It has long been cultivated due to its properties as a useful addition to the diet and high nutritional content. Unlike most fruits, avocados contain a high content of healthy fats and significantly less carbohydrates. The word avocado comes from the Nahuati tribe's word for the fruit 'ahuacati' which directly translated means 'testicle'.

Avocados are full of antioxidants. These antioxidants help the body fight free radicals and contribute to healthy health. In avocados we find, among other things, lutein and zeaxanthin - which, among other things, are found naturally in the eye's 'yellow spot'. These two antioxidants have been linked strongly to good eye health (1, 2).

 

Studies have shown that the intake of these nutrients is linked to a significantly reduced risk of cataracts and calcification of the retina (macular degeneration) - which is common among the elderly population (3).

 

Based on these clinical studies, one can conclude that eating avocados may have a positive, long-term impact on eye health.

 

Avocados can relieve the symptoms of rheumatism and arthritis

Rheumatism is a relatively common health problem and many people often look for ways to relieve symptoms and pain. Avocado oil can help with the symptoms of such disorders. This is thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties.

 

Several studies have shown that this type of oil can provide symptom relief for certain forms of arthritis in the joints (4, 5).

3. Avocado's fat helps absorb more nutrients from fruits and vegetables

Some nutrients are "fat soluble" - this means that they must be combined with fat to be absorbed and used properly. This includes, for example, vitamins A, D, E and K.

Fiber is one of our most important nutrients. It helps us to normalize bowel function, lower cholesterol levels, control blood sugar levels and contribute to good health. Studies have also shown that adequate fiber intake can reduce the chance of heart disease and diabetes.

 

5. Avocados may be able to prevent and reduce the chance of cancer

Cancer is a terrible disorder that affects far too many people - and is characterized by uncontrolled cell division.

 

There is a lack of research to prove that avocados can prevent cancer, but studies (with cells) have shown that avocado extract can prevent the growth of prostate cancer cells (9) and alleviate symptoms caused by chemotherapy.

 



More and larger studies - human studies - are needed to determine nutrition and this may be part of future cancer treatment, but there is already a lot of exciting research in the field that looks positive.

 

6. Avocados can help reduce weight

As mentioned, avocados contain a lot of fiber and little carbohydrates. This will make you feel full longer. This can be a significant benefit to those of us who are trying to cut down on calories and reduce weight a bit.

 

7. Avocados contribute to improved heart health

Several studies have shown that eating avocados can have a positive impact on the levels of Tryglyceride and total blood cholesterol levels. It has been shown that triglyceride levels can be lowered by up to 20%, while a reduction in bad cholesterol (LDL) by 22% and increase in good cholesterol (HDL) by 11% (7, 8) have been noted.
