STUDY: Ingredient in Olive Oil Can Kill Cancer Cells

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are still the most common treatments for most types of cancer, but researchers are constantly discovering new players in the fight against cancer that could potentially lead to less risky and painful treatments. A recent study conducted at Rutgers University discovered something that may prove to be vital information in the treatment of future cancer patients. According to their results, an ingredient found in Extra Virgin olive oil, called oleocanthal, can kill cancer cells quickly and effectively (in less than an hour) without harming healthy cells - it was also shown that the same component can have a positive effect in preventing Alzheimer's disease.

- What did the study show?

Researchers have proven that the effect of oleocanthal actually accelerates cancer cell death, but they still do not know 100% how it works. The theory worked out (the hypothesis) was that oleocanthal, the component found in extra virgin olive oil, attacked a specific protein in the cancer cells. This protein is the key to causing so-called apoptosis (programmed cell death) in the cells affected by cancer. In the study, which was a so-called in vitro study (in a laboratory setting with petri dishes and cell cultures), it was seen that when oleocanthal was added to the cancer cells, the affected cells began to die almost immediately - this was due to the oleocanthal destroying an important part of the cancer cell called the lysosome.

- Oleocanthal killed cancer cells during testing

In the study, they added oleocanthal to petri dishes that contained cancer cells - a number of positive reactions were seen, including:

  • The cancer cells began to die almost immediately after the addition of the oleocanthal
  • It took between 30 minutes and 1 hour before the cancer cells died - normally a cancer cell will persist for 16 to 24 hours before apoptosis
  • The study found that the researchers found that a specific protein was the source of cancer cell death
  • Oleocanthal destroyed the energy centers (lysosomes) of the cancer cells - which led to the release of cancer-destroying enzymes inside the cancer cell itself

- What's the way forward?

This study facilitates further research in this field - and one sees in particular that specific research aimed at the protein itself in the cancer cells can be very beneficial, as this can lead to destroying the former before they spread or divide. Larger studies, also aimed at people eventually, will be able to provide answers as to whether this is a treatment that can function as a substitute or supplement to other forms of cancer treatment.

Very exciting research - so feel free to share on social media so that the research world focuses on further research in this area.

- Olive oil has a number of health benefits

It is known from the past that olive oil can be preventative, in combination with the right diet, for heart and vascular diseases. Why not replace the salad dressing with olive oil? Try and use more olive oil in your daily diet. It will benefit your body very well.
